DC Preservation League Tours Historic MacVeagh Mansion

Staff Report / DClocal.org

Earlier this month, members of the DC Preservation League toured the historic MacVeagh mansion, which is now the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington, D.C. The mansion was originally owned by Emily MacVeagh, who purchased the land from developer Mary Foote Henderson, known for transforming Meridian Hill into an upscale residential and diplomatic community.

The MacVeagh House was constructed in 1911 by architect Nathan C. Wyeth and was one of the first buildings resulting from Henderson’s plans for the area. After MacVeagh’s death, her husband sold the property to the government of Mexico. At that time, Meridian Hill already hosted various embassies, including those of France, Switzerland, Spain, Cuba, Poland, and Lithuania.

To enhance the mansion's grandeur, the Mexican government added a portico to its Italian-style façade. The interior of the mansion combines different styles indicative of Mexican culture, with a main hall inspired by late-fifteenth-century Italian architecture, featuring a mahogany English banister, an eighteenth-century Mexican altarpiece, and a three-story mural by Roberto Cueva del Río.

The building served as the Embassy of Mexico for sixty-nine years until its relocation downtown in 1990, after which it became the Mexican Cultural Institute. The institute continues to promote Mexican culture through various programs aimed at showcasing the diversity of Mexican artistic talent and fostering understanding through art and dialogue.

Visitors can schedule appointments to tour the Mexican Cultural Institute to view its murals and intricate interior designs. All photos from the event were taken by Zachary Burt.
