Myrtle Beach Police Warn Residents About Scams

Staff Report / MBlocal.org

The Myrtle Beach Police Department (MBPD) has issued a warning to residents about potential scams and provided safety tips to help protect individuals from fraud.

Key recommendations include:

1. **Protect Your Personal Information**: Do not share personal or financial information unless you can confirm the recipient’s identity.

2. **Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Messages**: Exercise caution if you receive unexpected calls, texts, or emails, as scammers may impersonate trustworthy entities such as banks or government bodies.

3. **Check URLs and Email Addresses**: Scammers often create web addresses and email accounts that closely resemble credible ones. Verify these for subtle differences.

4. **Monitor Your Accounts**: Regularly review your bank statements and credit reports for unauthorized transactions.

5. **Verify Before You Trust**: If in doubt about a communication, contact the individual or organization directly using a verified contact number or website.

6. **Protect Your Home**: Secure doors and windows, turn on outside lights at night, and store any valuables out of sight.

7. **Educate Yourself and Others**: Share this information to assist friends and family in staying safe.

Residents are also encouraged to stay aware of their surroundings and community activities. If something seems too good to be true, it may be a scam. Individuals who think they may have fallen victim to a scam should call MBPD's non-emergency number at 843-918-1382 or contact their local police department. The MBPD emphasizes that public safety relies on community cooperation.
